Stop FGM_C!

The term FGM_C stands for female genital mutilation_cutting. FGM_C refers to a severe human rights violation in which parts of the female genitalia are cut off or injured without any medical purpose. This practice is usually performed on children aged 0-14 years, violating their rights under the Convention on the Rights of the Child and is considered a form of child abuse. FGM_C also infringes on the right to physical and psychological integrity and the right to self-determination.

Globally, more than 230 million girls and women are affected. In Germany, there are currently 103,947 affected women and 17,271 girls at risk. In Berlin alone, an estimated 5,626 affected women and nearly 526 girls at risk reside (sources: UNICEF, TDF/unreported cases statistics 2022). We, the Berlin Coordination Office against FGM_C, provide advice, support, and encouragement on all issues related to FGM_C. We are a coalition of experts from various fields, dedicated to the right to physical integrity. Our focus areas are prevention, counseling, and healthcare.

Community-led events for high-prevalence communities in Berlin are a crucial part of our work. These events facilitate the dissemination of information and the establishment of connections that are vital for addressing and destigmatizing the sensitive topic of FGM_C. Shared activities such as cooking, eating, and drinking together help to create a welcoming, low-threshold atmosphere at these events. However, there is a lack of funding for the provision of food and drink. We therefore ask for your support. Every donation, large or small, helps to foster open dialogue and supports women affected by FGM_C while protecting girls at risk.
