Forests in North Rhine-Westphalia (Germany) have suffered greatly from the effects of climate change in recent years. We have witnessed how entire areas of forest have died and the soil is becoming increasingly degraded. A new generation of forest is only slowly growing, but the trees are often not adapted to future conditions. In response to this challenge, the association Zusammenwald e.V. was founded. We have set ourselves the goal of buying up forests that have previously been used commercially and preserving and increasing the ecological value of these forests for our society in the long term.
The Zusammenwald e.V. association creates and preserves natural habitats. We are convinced that climate-stable forests serve the long-term well-being of our society and the earth. Our focus is on the natural development and promotion of biodiversity in our forests. A small part of our forests serves as a social experimentation area. Here we can learn with and from nature.
This project serves to purchase an area of woodland. With the voluntary members (and volunteers) of the association, this forest area is to be converted so that it has the highest possible natural value. This is to be achieved with three measures in particular:

This project serves to purchase an area of woodland. With the voluntary members (and volunteers) of the association, this forest area is to be converted so that it has the highest possible natural value. This is to be achieved with three measures in particular:
- Planting climate-stable trees: Native tree species that the scientific community expects to cope well with the future climate. We also want to ensure that they are species that are adapted to the ecosystem so that they can interact with other living organisms and thus create a species-rich forest.
- Increase soil fertility: Soil fertility should be promoted through humus; we want to achieve this in particular with dead wood and deciduous trees whose leaves decompose quickly into humus. Furthermore, we do not use heavy machinery. In recent years, commercially used areas have been worked with heavy machinery (harvesters) with the result that the soil is damaged by compaction and the creation of furrows. We refrain from using them and try to renaturalize damaged soils. In addition, the soil was drained in places in the past; we want to reverse such structural interventions.
- Creating refuge areas: Light structures promote the habitat of rare species, these retreats are rare in commercial forests as the forest area is optimized for trees, resulting in a dense forest. Furthermore, by enriching deadwood and stacking deadwood, we want to create diverse retreats that provide a habitat for animals and insects in particular.
*The location is given as Siegen (zip code: 57072, Germany). The forest is to be located between Siegen and Cologne. As the association does not yet have the funds to purchase a forest, it is unfortunately not yet possible to specify a specific piece of forest.
