    About this project

Simon G. from Coro EntreVoces e.V. is responsible for this project
    (Todas las informaciones en español.)

Compared to their male colleagues, female composers are strongly under-represented both in public perception and performance practices. In addition, they are often denied appropriate financial and social recognition for their work. This asymmetry is even more pronounced for female composers from the Global South. According to a study by Donne - “Women in Music”- of 111 orchestras in 31 countries in the 2021/22 season, only 7.7% of the pieces performed were composed by women, of whom the vast majority were white (5.5%). (Source: https://donne-uk.org/research-new/)

Our project “Sonidos Interseccionales/Intersectional Sounds” seeks to shed more light on female composers from Latin America/Abya Yala and honor their work, and in so doing to make a statement against discrimination and in favor of equality in global artistic creation.

We are the members of two Berlin choirs, EntreVoces and Contrapunto. At three concerts in summer 2024, we will exclusively perform works by female composers from Latin America. Seven of the pieces were composed specially for the project and will be premiered in the Chamber Music Hall of the Berliner Philharmonie. The composers are: Ana Margarita Mora Elvira, Camila Fawape, Elisa Schmelkes, Delfina Ovalle, Mariana Leon, Miriam Rosas Báez, Nedjelka Candina Polomer and Wilma Alba Cal.

We are convinced that it is essential for the composers – as well as for our choir director Catalina Restrepo – to receive appropriate financial recognition for their artistic work. Your donation will help us to make this possible!

We also want the composers to experience the premiere of their works live and thus make their struggle against inequality heard, not only through their music but also through their presence in Berlin. Your donation will help us to make this possible!

Unfortunately, our funding applications to various institutions have all been rejected – non-commercial cultural projects don't have it easy right now. That's why we appreciate your contribution to Sonidos Interseccionales/Intersectional Sounds even more!
