A new hip for Anton

Tierschutz Halle e.V.
A project from Tierschutz Halle e.V. in Halle Saale, Germany
Anton's hind legs are already severely deformed as he only uses them in the recovery position to prevent pain. The reason for this is an extremely deformed hip. The cheerful male dog is only 3 years old and needs a hip operation to live pain-free.

About this project

Anne Schier from Tierschutz Halle e.V. is responsible for this project
In December, Anton, a male Bernese mountain dog, came to us at the animal shelter in Halle. We had never seen such badly deformed legs before. Completely emaciated, weighing just 40 kg, far too light for a full-grown 3-year-old Bernese Mountain Dog, and with a gait that was painful to watch. This dog had obviously not received any medical care throughout its life.

We did a complete check-up with blood work and x-rays and found out that the main problem was not the legs, but a typical breed disease: a genetically caused massive hip deformity. This also explains the deformation of his paws. He must have been in incredible pain for an extremely long time. One of the doctors said that it was unbelievable that this dog could still stand up. But that's Anton, so full of life and eager to enjoy life to the maximum. We provided initial relief with painkillers and hydrotherapy to build up his muscles, but this is not a permanent solution.

A further examination brought hopeful news. The orthopaedic surgeons believe that the deformity can be corrected by a very major surgical procedure. Artificial hip implants will replace the damaged ones, an operation that is incredibly complex and challenging in terms of aftercare. We have found a clinic that will carry out this operation. Although Anton's ankle joints are severely deformed due to years of careful posture, they are not an obstacle to the healing process.

Looking after him in the following weeks will be a huge challenge for our dog team. In the first few weeks, lively Anton is only allowed to walk for a few minutes, and rooms and smooth walking paths must be carpeted to prevent him from slipping. In order for him to cope with being allowed to move around so little, we have to keep him busy cognitively, but he is not allowed to jump around for joy, as he loves to do. A small dog is given a rest in a crate to avoid uncontrolled movement. With a caliber like Anton, we have to get creative. And as both sides are operated on several weeks apart, it will be a quarter of a year before he can lead a reasonably normal life again.

In addition to the medical issues, a very important point is the enormous financial burden that we will face. Operations, hospitalization and physiotherapy will cost around 10,000 euros. As an association, just like private owners, we can't just shake that out of our sleeves. Decisions for or against medical help should never depend on money, but we also have to look at how we can raise such an enormous sum. That's why we hope that this donation project will give our Anton a better life. Because he deserves it so much! Please support our lovable giant Anton. He urgently needs your help.
