A fountain and maize seed for Machenje

Stiftung Erdheilungsplätze
A project from Stiftung Erdheilungsplätze in Mukuni, Zambia
In the village of Machenje in Zambia, one in six children does not live to see their fifth birthday. We would like to help and build a fountain to enable the irrigation of the maize seed, which is essential for survival.

About this project

Tilo Hildebrandt from Stiftung Erdheilungsplätze is responsible for this project
Our founder Tilo Hildebrandt visited the village of Machenje in Zambia last year and has had a special connection to this village ever since.  Zambia ranks 110th out of 128 on the Global Hunger Index (2023).

A total of 69 families live in Machenje in circular mud huts. The most important source of food for them is maize seed. This not only has to be bought and sown, but also irrigated. However, the inhabitants of Machenje do not have the means to do this.  Each family needs 5kg. The price for this corresponds to 250 kwacha and thus a cocktail in our country: 250 kwacha = 12€. This will satisfy a family's hunger for a year.

Our founder Tilo Hildebrandt already donated maize seed here last year. However, this has now dried up. The village therefore urgently needs a fountain to be able to irrigate future harvests and thus secure their livelihood.

We would like to help and initially provide the village with a fountain so that we can donate maize seed again this year. It's about lives. Headman Levy Munba says: "Every sixth child in Machenje does not live to see their fifth birthday.
