    About this project

Christiane Freyer from Inside:Out - das queere Zentrum in Wuppertal e.V. is responsible for this project
In the Queering the map workshop, we want to develop new perspectives for a gender-equitable city together with queer people and allies. Through the exchange of experiences, creative ideas will emerge to integrate the needs of queer and female people. A final action in the urban space creates visibility and empowerment.

    1. increasing visibility
We want to make queer life more visible by highlighting queer places, cultural events and initiatives in Wuppertal.

    2. strengthening self-efficacy
We intend to offer the participants of our workshops the opportunity to experience and strengthen their self-efficacy.

    3. encourage participation
We are committed to promoting the participation of queer people in urban design processes. This should motivate participation in political decisions, urban planning measures and the creation of more inclusive public spaces.

    4. create awareness and understanding
We want to raise awareness of the challenges and needs of queer citizens in Wuppertal's urban population. This should contribute to a better understanding, empathy and solidarity in the city.

    5. shaping a more inclusive city
Our long-term vision is a more inclusive and equitable city in which all people, regardless of their sexual orientation or gender identity, feel safe and equally involved. We want to help make urban planning in Wuppertal more inclusive in the long term and be a role model for other cities.

We want to hold our workshops in summer 2024.

The project is being carried out by Public Interest Design students Anna Nill and Kira Sandrock (University of Wuppertal) in cooperation with the queer center Inside:Out e.V. During the project, the educational initiative Schlau Wuppertal e.V. will be involved, particularly in the introductory phase and the problem identification phase, in order to provide optimal support for the participants. The Schlau Wuppertal team members have a lot of experience in dealing with queer participants and their life situations.
In the course of the Stadtkaleidoskop project, which has already been implemented, there is already a cooperation with the City of Wuppertal's Equal Opportunities and Anti-Discrimination Department. We would like to continue this. To this end, project ideas and problems are to be presented to the city so that they can be heard in politics and dealt with in the future.

Through our previous project, we established contacts with various queer-feminist initiatives in the city of Wuppertal. We also plan to collaborate with them on specific topics and according to the wishes of the participants.
