Maldusa consists of three practical project modules: we have set up
two stations in Lampedusa and Palermo, i.e. concrete spaces for support, monitoring, research and coming together. And we have put a
small, fast monitoring boat into operation, which will soon be deployed from Lampedusa.
Against state violence at the borders - against failure to provide assistance and pushbacks at sea, against detention and deprivation of rights in Sicily - we are creating infrastructures for the right to freedom of movement, for protection and asylum.
In concrete solidarity with people fleeing and migrating: Maldusa provides advice and information. Against human rights violations at sea and on land: Maldusa researches and documents. Moreover we organise events and transnational networking meetings.
The launch of the Maldusa project was made possible by the support of United4Rescue, medico international and Pro Asyl, among others. For the continuation of our work on land and at sea in 2024 we are urgently looking for donations.
Maldusa - The name of the project is dedicated to a night-time distress call from a boat on the Alarm Phone, which was on its way from Libya to Europe. When asked what their destination was, the person on the satellite phone replied: "Maldusa" - for the search for a (fictitious) place of safety and welcome between Malta and Lampedusa.
Maldusa: an imaginary nowhere and anywhere land in the Mediterranean Sea, an imagined destination of hope and freedom, a space that, every day, we try to build and to make real through our struggles, hand in hand with people on the move.
