About this project

Natascha Wothke from Pro Animale für Tiere in Not e.V. is responsible for this project
Dear animal lovers,

Pro Animale für Tiere in Not e.V. is an internationally active animal welfare organization that has been recognized as a non-profit and particularly worthy of support since 1985 and is financed exclusively by donations (our administrative costs are 6.6%). Every day, we take full responsibility for over 3,800 animal brothers and sisters in 25 animal welfare facilities in 5 European countries and Turkey.

On June 23, 2023, our animal sanctuary "Sorriso di San Francesco" in the valley of Assisi/Italy was hit by a flood disaster.

Unprecedented in the history of Assisi, torrential downpours fell with terrible force over the Assisi region. Torrential masses of water poured into the Tescio River, which runs through our valley. The water level rose by more than 4 meters within 40 minutes. In addition to flooding, mudslides and landslides were the catastrophic result.

Some of our stables for goats, sheep, pigs and chickens were destroyed or completely washed away, and the riverbank - from soil to bushes and trees - was destroyed. The vital supply bridge that connected our main building (the old mill with our dog charges) with our other charges, the horses, donkeys, sheep, goats, pigs and cats on the other bank of the river in the valley, was torn away by the impetuous force of the water.

Our pastures are flooded with thick mud - garbage and garbage were swept away by the water from the settlements along the river and washed up here. The extent of the devastation and destruction is devastating.

Our cockerels Philipp and Pascal and our two pot-bellied pigs Cesarea and Dulcinea fell victim to the floods. Thankfully, our staff and animal keepers, as well as our other animal protégés (32 dogs, 50 cats, 3 horses, 3 donkeys, 24 sheep, 12 goats, 10 chickens, 1 pig and 1 cow) remained unharmed.

You can find a video that illustrates the extent of the disaster here:

In addition to the extensive work of clearing the riverbed of garbage, uprooted trees, parts of the destroyed bridge and sheepfold, as well as restoring the drinking water and electricity supply, there is now one major project in particular:

The installation of the 26-metre-long supply bridge, which is essential for the operation of our animal sanctuary - at a cost of 66,000 euros according to a panel of experts.

As our association is financed exclusively by donations, we are urgently dependent on your help so that our animals in Assisi do not lose their home - please support us, thank you very much!
