About this project

The medical care of pregnant women in Gambia is faced with enormous challenges. Lack of infrastructure, lack of equipment in the few medical stations, insufficient training of medical staff and cultural barriers endanger the health of mother and child.
Especially in rural areas, the situation is unbearable: pregnant women often do not even have access to the most basic services such as clean water or sanitary facilities. If complications arise during pregnancy or childbirth, women often have to be transported for hours on a donkey cart to the nearest medical station, which is usually far away.
In addition, women in Gambia can still have difficulty accessing medical care due to traditional cultural barriers.
With the Kundembo Infirmary, a health post and education center, a project of the Dresden Banjul Organization, an infrastructure has already been successfully created to educate the local population on the topics of sexuality, health, hygiene, circumcision, and vaccinations.
In a next step, this center is to be expanded to include a birth center. The aim of the planned house is to provide women with professional care during pregnancy and to enable them to give birth under medical supervision.
STATUS
Dr. Sulayman Sambou, who heads the Kundembo Infirmary, has developed the floor plan with Gambian architects and submitted it for approval. The following facility is planned:
- Veranda as an outdoor waiting area for relatives.
- 4 beds in the preparation room (prenatal)
- Delivery room - the heart of the building - with 2 beds
- 3 beds (postnatal) for recovery of mother and child
- side wing with registration and lounge for employees
- sanitary rooms with WC and shower
