The memorial on the Eisenacher Göpelskuppe opposite the Wartburg is an impressive, extraordinary place to commemorate the mostly young victims on the fronts of the First World War.
Every donation, every EURO is an act of appreciation for the victims of the past and a reminder to the current and future generations of young people. Together we can ensure that this historic site is preserved.
The memorial on the Eisenacher Göpelskuppe opposite the Wartburg is an impressive, extraordinary place to commemorate the mostly young victims on the fronts of the First World War.
It reminds us of the futility of bloody wars. In 1914, young German volunteers stormed onto a hill near the town of Langemarck in Belgium into British-French machine gun fire, in which over 2,000 of them lost their lives.

The reason for the fundraiser
After more than 92 years since its inauguration, an extensive renovation of the fallen memorial “Langemarck Memorial” is urgently needed as a war memorial in memory of one of the bloodiest battles of the First World War near Langemarck in Belgian Flanders. On November 10, 1914, over 2,000 young German volunteers, singing the song of the Germans, ran towards enemy positions in open terrain and were senselessly destroyed by machine gun fire.

The damages
Limestone slabs are detaching from the backing; Spalling, shifting of stone blocks, opening of the joints are leading to the current deterioration of the memorial.

Particular importance in the social and cultural environment
Langemarck in Flanders commemorates the particularly high losses among German students who, as volunteers, ran to their certain doom during a hopeless attack on enemy positions. We are also reminded of this on site at the German military cemetery in Langemarck.

Monument value (architectural and historical significance)
In addition to the fraternity monument erected in 1902, which is dedicated to those who fell in the German wars of unification in the 19th century, the Langemarck Memorial, erected in 1933, serves those who fell in the First World War.
With SMAD Order 124/126, the Soviet Military Administration of Germany had the relief of the memorial removed and left it to decay.
In 2009/2010, the Monument Preservation Association was able to temporarily restore the memorial for the first time in order to save it from irreversible decay.

financing
The project total of 250,000 EURO is largely financed through donations.
