Sembrando Futuros - Let's plant for a better future!

We are developing our educational farm (Finca educativo) on the outskirts of Tipitapa (Nicaragua) to host a greater variety of different grain plants, fruit trees and vegetables and to be equipped with a solar powered and rainwater supported irrigation system. 

Since 2020, we have been learning to grow various types of fruits, such as Guayaba, lemons and bananas, and vegetables, such as cucumber, pumpkin, tomatoes.  We have also been experimenting with beans, wheat and corn and are learning together with our target group how and what can be sustainably (ecologically and economically) grown. The projects is directed to local small-scale farmers who are interested in learning more, and families that have a small plot of land and no prior experience of growing food, gain fundamental knowledge about sustainable agriculture. Especially in rural areas of Nicaragua like Cristo Rey, many people own plots of land that often remain unused due to a lack of sufficient knowledge about farming. Through education provided on our finca, we want to motivate people to start growing fruits and vegetables for their own consumption, thereby enabling a degree of self-sufficiency. We also attend to the visitors of our Library on Wheels, who are learning about environmental pollution and protection and sustainability in a broad sense and appropriate for their age.

Due to the distance to the electricity grid, we rely on a diesel generator to pump water to provide sufficient irrigation for the plants. This is not environmentally sustainable and comes with high costs. Therefore, we want to acquire a solar powered pumping system and a rainwater collection reservoir to operate the irrigation system in the future in line with more sustainable farming practices.

Additionally, we aim to diversify and enlarge the cultivation with more and new plants and want to start a new round for the children from the respective "library on wheels" villages, to cultivate their own plants on the farm and learn more about nature and the origin of food.
