Bridging Gaps e.V.
A project from Bridging Gaps e.V. in pretoria Cullinan, South Africa

About this project

Juliane H. from Bridging Gaps e.V. is responsible for this project
Pan-Africanism can be described as a movement formed to unite all human beings who have an African blood line. It can also be further explained as a conscious awakening of the melanated beings. This camp was developed to help connect young people to African history and their own identity, thereby helping them to feel safer and more confident as young black people.
Duration
Start date:
24/11/2023.
End date: 13/01/2024.
Duration of each project phase:
24-26.11.2023: Planning Weekend - With a team of five adult supervisors, including facilitators, we get together at the end of November to prepare the camp. For the planning weekend we have set oursel
es the following goals:
1) First, to reflect and rethink the goals and orientation of the camp structure,
2) second, to revise the program and
3) third, to plan the camp from an administrative and logistical perspective.
08-10.12.2023: Facilitator Training Weekend - Training for young group leaders and helpers of our Growth Path project usually takes place a week before a big camp. The “Pan-African Camp” is led by the older multipliers, all of whom have been active in the organization for more than 3 years.
11-15.12.2023: Pan-African Camp - All the young people who become successful in the application process are invited to the camp. • 13.01.2024: Closing Evaluation Day - All the teenagers who were part of the “Pan-African Camp” will come together for the evaluation discussion.
Target group: Black young people
Aged: 17-20.
Objectives of the project
Focus Area:
a) Black Empowerment.
b) Inter-ethnic relations.
c) African history.
Objectives:
  • Participants feel empowered and develop a stronger and healthy black identity.
  • Guide the participants to the path of conscious awakening as an African.
  • Guide the participants to an African perspective of history and education.
  • Guide the participants to critically engage with Pan-Africanism as a philosophy.
  • Encourage the participants to develop community uplifting projects that will help enlighten the communities at large.
Activity and Content Session
Take a step: Take a step is the first activity we have with the participants that come to the camp. The activity is fundementally about encouraging the participants to do some self introspection about their knowledge of Africa as a continent. During the activity we ask questions that are based on african knowledge, if the participant knows the answer to the question they can take a step forward without telling anyone the answer. On the second half of the activity we ask questions based on western knowledge and the same principles apply. This is to help the participants realize how much western knowledge we know compared to african knowledge.
