It's a heartbreaking sight: dogs chained to barrels, trees or steel anchors with no opportunity to express their natural needs or socialize with other dogs. Most of these dogs are in a catastrophic state: ingrown collars, starved, tortured and crippled. We at APAL Crete cannot stand by and see this.
As an animal welfare association, we have made it our mission to help these poor creatures and give them a better life. But this is a mammoth task, as the Greek authorities have so far done little to address this sad reality, which is playing out in many places in Crete and elsewhere in Greece. Therefore, as a local animal welfare organization that carefully takes care of many of these chain dogs, we depend on donations to continue our work.
Our on-site helpers visit the dogs once a year to give them food, water, tick and flea protection, wormers and to check their health. We are also committed to having the dogs neutered to get the stray problem under control. But our commitment goes far beyond that: we also talk to the owners and try to bring about a change in thinking. Sometimes we are even allowed to free chained dogs from the chain if the owner understands that this type of housing is unacceptable for the animal or if he understands that animal cruelty in public is not tolerated.
In some cases, we are even allowed to set up specially made kennels that give the animals back a piece of their quality of life. But all this costs money - a lot of money. Every penny we get goes directly to caring for the animals. This project alone devours about 17,000.00 euros annually, and these are only the basic costs. Veterinary costs and treatment of injured and sick dogs are additional.
Everyone who supports us helps to alleviate the suffering of these poor animals and give them a better future. With a chain dog donation you can help us to continue this valuable work and help even more animals. Because every dog that we can free from the chain is a small victory for animal welfare and a big step in the right direction.
