About this project

Victoria Romann from Architects of Music e.V. is responsible for this project
Architects of Music e.V. connects people across continents through musical education.

Namere/Mpererwe, a small bustling suburb in northern Kampala, a few dusty and rutted streets off the main road is the home (the "base") of Architects of Music. Opposite the big mango tree is the gate, the entrance to musical life in the middle of a common Ugandan neighbourhood ("community").

AoM is located in the city of Kampala, the capital of Uganda in Africa.
Since it was founded in 2017 by the German and Ugandan musicians Victoria Romann, Regina Rothe and Joseph Ocen, the project has grown steadily. Over 30 children and young people between the ages of 8 and 22 call the AoM base in Kampala their home.

Architects of Music is a unique project in Kampala, in Uganda at large: music and cultures from two continents are connected here - and very important: on an equal basis!

The valuable cultural assets of Uganda should be preserved and passed on for many generations to come - the team on site in Kampala makes an enormously important contribution to this every day. At the same time, we want to serve the great interest in western music culture and enable the young people at AoM to have a unique and high quality education experience in East African and Western music culture. In addition to music lessons, AoM also means a home, a safe haven for the young members in Kampala. At AoM, they get to be seen, heard, respected, encouraged, gain experience with like-minded people, thrive beyond their own limits and truly learn for life.

The biggest milestone so far in 5 years of AoM: the purchase of the property in Kampala - the "Base" - in 2022

Our goal: We would like to give youth of our program in Uganda the opportunity to stand on their own feet in the future through high-quality music education - as music/instrumental teachers and/or as performers on stage. On the one hand, we offer secure jobs in the project itself, on the other hand, the young people should be so well trained that they have the chance of a good and secure job outside of AoM - in Uganda & worldwide.

AoM offers:
- Music lessons (Western and traditional East African instruments)
- Home on the base for 10+ teenagers from AoM
- Reliable jobs for members over the age of 18 who play a key role in day-to-day project work
- Regular appearances by the Performance Group at events
- School scholarships
- Holiday camps for members and interested children / young people from the neighborhood
- Workshops with international musicians
- Specific themed workshops

The annual costs of the project are currently around €20,000 - this includes:
- Salaries for the team
- Meals & toiletries
- Sunday Lunch
- Maintenance of instruments/costumes
- Expenses for health
