Why this project?
Myanmar is a forgotten conflict unleashed by a brutal military coup in 2021. 15 million people are in dire humanitarian need (as many as in Ukraine) and there are 15,000 political prisoners (as many as in Iran). And yet chances are, in the West you will not have heard this story.
“We are the Seeds: the Art of Myanmar's Spring Revolution” is an exhibition by 20 artists-in-exile from Myanmar. Through their painting, photography, cartoons, film, performance and sound art, they take part in their country’s democratic revolution. They also represent the empowerment of women, LGTBQI movement and ethnic minorities in Myanmar during the last 10 years. Together, they sketch a hopeful future for a democratic, inclusive and peaceful Myanmar.
The exhibition will take place over 2 weeks from 10-22 July in Berlin, Germany.
What do we want to achieve?
- Showcase leading contemporary artists from Myanmar
- Achieve greater public awareness of the situation in Myanmar
- Support artists in exile so they can continue their work
It is a project for artists and activists, for people with an interest in democracy or in South-East Asia as a region - and for all Berlin residents and visitors curious to learn about this rich culture.
It is for the people of Myanmar who are unable to freely express their views because of a brutal military dictatorship. Through their art, we give them a voice in the heart of Europe.
Why support us?
We have secured a venue in the heart of Berlin and received funding for several events for showcasing the artists’ work to a diverse audience.
But we still miss funding for material costs, transport and printing, and artist fees. Without your support, we will not be able to go ahead with the exhibition.
Who are we?
Li Li, Zoncy and Helena are Myanmar artists and want to help their community succeed in Europe. Christian, Sophie and Patrick spent time living in Myanmar in their careers. Nathalie is a leading curator of Myanmar art.
We believe in the power of art to change minds and inspire action and solidarity.
