About this project

Paulino Botao from Weltweit - Gesellschaft zur Förderung lokaler Ini. is responsible for this project
Imagine transforming 16 hectares of degraded land in Mozambique into a thriving bamboo forest that empowers local communities, promotes biodiversity, and protects against the escalating impacts of climate change. The Matutuíne Bamboo Park is a groundbreaking initiative aiming to renew the ecosystem of the Matutuine District -an area deeply affected by deforestation and extraction of sand for construction -  by creating a bamboo forest that will anchor the soil, prevent flooding, create jobs, and build community resilience to future climate disasters. This is especially important for Mozambique, a country increasingly vulnerable to the escalating impacts of climate change, including more intense cyclones, prolonged droughts, and severe flooding.

This project began 12 years ago with a vision to unlock bamboo’s immense potential as a sustainable resource for Mozambique. Through education and advocacy, we demonstrated how bamboo can transform lives and landscapes. As a result, the Maputo Conservation Area allocated 16 hectares of degraded land for restoration—a monumental step toward making the Matutuíne Bamboo Park a reality.

Why Bamboo?

Bamboo’s rapid growth and versatility make it a unique solution to both environmental and socio-economic challenges. In addition to restoring land and stabilizing soil, bamboo offers Mozambicans a sustainable resource for emergency shelter, erosion protection, and a foundation for building resilient infrastructure. The Matutuine Bamboo Park will also serve as an education and research center for exploring bamboo’s potential to combat climate risks and promote economic stability.

With funds raised, we’ve achieved:

  • Two international workshops connecting German and Mozambican expertise
  • 4,000 bamboo seedlings and 5,000 endemic tree seedlings produced
  • A functional water system installed
  • The architectural design for a Bamboo Research Center
  • A greenhouse built for sustainable seedling production
Your donation supports:

  • Environmental Restoration of Mozambique’s fragile land: planting over 9000 bamboo and native trees to prevent soil erosion, combat flooding, and protect against strong winds.
  • Education and Awareness: providing a space to educate future generations on environmental conservation and sustainable practices.
  • Sustainable Livelihoods: empowering local communities with alternative income sources and demonstrating the potential of bamboo for local industries, such as sustainable building materials and biochar for agriculture.
Donate today and be a part of this transformative journey: Let´s bring the Matutuine Bamboo Park to life!
