About this project

Thomas Ballhoff from Deutsche Kinderhospiz Dienste e.V. Bochum is responsible for this project
According to the German Children's Hospice Association, more than 200 children and young people in Bochum have life-shortening illnesses. They die as children or adolescents. This process often drags on for years, during which the children slowly and inexorably lose more and more of their abilities until they finally die. In this difficult situation, the Löwenzahn Outpatient Children's and Youth Hospice Service in Bochum offers support to families.

We offer support
- well-trained volunteers accompany the children and young people with life-shortening illnesses in their families. Support for siblings and parents is also possible and often makes sense - during the illness, but also after the death of the affected child. The volunteers thus create additional quality of life and joy of life in the families.

We also want to promote self-help.  With the "You never walk alone" project, affected families network with each other. This provides support, help and encouragement. This also applies to the network work by making the entire support network of children's hospice work, from inpatient children's hospices to counselling services to specialised care services, accessible to those affected.  The establishment of the network is very personnel-intensive and is not subsidised by the health insurance companies to the tune of one cent, but in order to be able to do all this, we need you. You can help.

Do you know our sibling group the "LÖWENBANDE"? This is where siblings of children with life-shortening illnesses and those who have already died meet. Here, the focus is on the siblings - with their needs, experiences and questions.

Siblings of seriously ill children find themselves in a difficult situation. They live in concern for their siblings and their parents. Sometimes there is simply too little time for a relaxed family life. That is why we founded the LÖWENBANDE, an offer for siblings of seriously ill children. We meet once a month and do something together. Transport, food and entrance fees are covered by us. The children/young people are picked up and brought back - there are no costs for the parents. We are accompanied by well-trained volunteers - so there is also time to talk about whatever else is important.

Another focus of our work is the accompaniment of children and adolescents with life-threatening acute illnesses (e.g. cancer). Parents and children are in a particularly difficult situation when they have an acute life-threatening illness.

Help us! Make a donation to support the children and their families. Thank you very much!
