Defending the rights of people-on-the-move

I Have Rights e.V. (IHR) is a German-Greek human rights organisation that provides asylum seekers and migrants at the external EU border on the Greek island of Samos with access to independent and free legal information and supports them in asserting their rights. 

The reason for our work is the severely restricted freedom of movement of asylum seekers with the entry into force of the EU-Turkey deal in March 2016. As a rule, they are not allowed to leave the island until the often lengthy asylum procedure is completed, despite untenable psychological and social conditions in the camps. Due to the isolation from civil society, the lack of state support structures and a glaring lack of local lawyers, asylum seekers are effectively denied access to independent legal and asylum procedure information. 

This is precisely where we come in: IHR is one of few legal NGOs on Samos. In addition to individual legal information, we offer dedicated advocacy work, we never tire of denouncing human rights abuses and working for change. We systematically bring complaints and appeals to the attention of UN Special Rapporteurs, politicians and international courts. The combination of these three fields - legal information, advocacy and strategic litigation - is unique on Samos.

Our goal is to collectively address and overcome unfair and inhumane practices in the asylum and migration context. We strongly reject the detention of refugees and migrants and push backs. We stand up for the right to asylum and a diverse social coexistence.
