About this project

There are too many cars in the city. This is no coincidence, but was planned years ago, has been and will continue to be built this way. The fact that this is no longer up to date is expressed in a nationwide comparison, for example, in poor green space, nitrogen oxide and noise values, but also inadequate bicycle infrastructure. It is not only our city that is looking back on this development, but many European metropolises - and they are no longer idly watching!
Fewer cars - more space for everyone
Whether superblocks, traffic-calmed zones or progressive parking management, there is already a colorful bouquet of measures for a more car-reduced city. We have bundled these into 9 demands as a citizens' petition and legally tested their political feasibility. The car should not disappear from the city in principle, but within the densely populated B4 ring it should once again become what it was intended to be: a commercial vehicle. Deliveries and transportation are to remain possible to the full extent, while the cars, which stand still for an average of 33 minutes a day (nordbayern.de, 2021), will disappear from the cityscape - at least already from the roadside. Many opportunities for vibrant public spaces, safety for pedestrian and bicycle mobility, and much-needed urban greenery present themselves if we minimize stationary and moving car traffic in our streets.
How can this be done?
With the citizens' petition "Nuremberg car-free" we not only bring sensible traffic turnaround measures to the city council, but also promote the discourse in the city society. With panel discussions, expert lectures and demonstrative actions (e.g. a parklet in an upside-down car), we are already helping to shape the city. Our goal, in addition to very concrete decisions in the city leadership, is to draw more attention to the issue of car traffic in Nuremberg. Is a highway expansion in the city really still necessary? What could our streets look like without so many cars? How can everyone - young and old, native and immigrant, fit and physically challenged, members of each gender - enjoy the city more as "their space"?
Who are we?
We are a team of now about 15 volunteers of all ages who have been on the topic since the beginning of 2022. Some of us got to know each other at the climate camp, the rest joined enthusiastically. With Nuremberg car-free, they want to create a noticeable progress in Nuremberg City Hall, which is difficult to see when demonstrating alone. The group does not belong to any political party and, as a subgroup of "Autofrei leben ! e.V.", is committed to non-profit status. All donations usually go towards public relations and events, including of course printing costs, digital advertising and speakers' fees. We want to put the topic on the agenda by the fall of 2023, and that means a lot of work, for which we would be extremely pleased to receive support of any kind!
