    About this project

    T. Eigen from Kabissa - Space for Change in Africa is responsible for this project
Kabissa is a non-governmental organization founded in 1999. Our mission is to help African civil society organizations to put Information and Communication Technology (ICT) to work for the benefit of their communities. We launched in Lagos, Nigeria but are now a Pan-African platform run out of Bainbridge Island, near Seattle in the United States.

Kabissa's current priority is to support the networking, information sharing and ICT peer learning needs of African civil society organizations, which we do by maintaining an online platform at http://www.kabissa.org with a searchable organization directory, community blog and member newsletter. Kabissa also organizes regular Africa Roundtable meetings in local communities (with remote participation via Internet) featuring a lightning round of introductions and guest speakers from member organizations.

Kabissa is different from Facebook and similar social networks because it is owned and governed by a nonprofit organization closely connected with African Civil Society. It is run with African stakeholders in mind - not corporate shareholders. Kabissa represents a vision to empower grassroots organizations in Africa to take control over their own means of communication.

Kabissa's primary target beneficiaries are the 1600+ civil society organizations represented in the Kabissa directory. They are working throughout Africa on a range of crucial issues from advocacy and human rights to education and social services, and through Kabissa they are able to take control over their presence on the Internet and build their capacity to use ICT. Secondary beneficiaries are researchers, students, media, and other interested individuals and organizations that read and use Kabissa content to learn about and contribute to the important work being done by African Civil Society.
