About this project

Art is the backbone of Wajukuu. It is not only understood as practice, but as a way of life. With the help of art classes, Wajukuu empowers children and young people to cope with everyday challenges and to stand up against injustice.
And yet the collective has to watch again and again how they lose teenagers to drugs and crime year after year because they can neither start an education nor find a job because of their background. To counteract this lack of opportunity, Wajukuu sets up a workshop.
The aim is to impart technical knowledge and skills to young participants, to solve everyday problems and to earn money. For this Wajukuu needs our support!
The Mukuru slum is located on a hillside below the factories of Nairobi's industrial area. A nearby garbage dump attracts the youth from the slum. Unable to find work in the factories that plague their neighborhood, scouring the garbage for salable items is their only livelihood. Poverty drives many into crime and drug trafficking. Violence and sexual abuse are omnipresent and endanger the health and often the life of their young victims.
Wajukuu Arts Project
Out of this situation, Wajukuu Arts was born in 2007, founded by young people who grew up in Lunga Lunga themselves, as a testament to people's resilience and ability to transform suffering into beauty. This belief helped the founders themselves succeed in the art world and participate very successfully in documenta 15 in 2022.
But the group wants more than their personal success. They are aiming the Lunga-Lunga slum to become a place where a child can thrive. The workshops are intended to be a further step towards qualifying young people and rise their chances for a self-determined life.
