Dual-language Picture Book Cinema
In our project "Dual-language Picture Book Cinema" high quality picture books are displayed on a big screen similar to a film show. Shared storytelling is especially important in nurseries and kindergartens, but also in primary schools with large numbers of minority ethnic children. It promotes discussion - in the children's mother tongue as well, if parents or 'neighbourhood mothers' are present - and contributes significantly to language and reading development as well as integration and a sense of community. The "Dual-language Picture Book Cinema" can therefore lead to an active improvement in children's educational opportunities. And this is in the places where it is most needed - in the socially disadvantaged areas of our cities.
The Picture Book Cinema grew considerably during 2012. New nurseries and primary schools in Kreuzberg, Neukölln and Wedding came on board as partners. In total 30 nurseries (Kitas) and primary schools implemented the 'Cinema'. By involving 'neighbourhood mothers' and volunteers the project also helps to promote neighbourliness and civic responsibility among minority ethnic people living in areas of social deprivation.
A total of over 1.000 children in Berlin regularly benefit from the Picture Book Cinema.
Enquires to the project from nurseries and primary schools are constantly rising. To enable this successful project to expand into other deprived areas in Berlin Bürgerstiftung Berlin needs long term finance for:
Picture books(70 picture books à € 13,- per nursery/school) 910 EUR
Sponsorship of a nursery (50 performances per year) 2.500 EUR
Sponsorship of the project in Brunnenviertel (10 Kitas + 2 primary schools) for one year 25.000 EUR
Bürgerstiftung Berlin and its workers thank you on behalf of the children.
