With our innovative social recycling model, we give former waste collectors the opportunity to work and earn a living, helping them to find a way out of poverty. To achieve this goal, we need your help – to equip our mobile recyclers with Recycling-Bikes.
AMOR is a NPO active in the Waste Management services sector. We have been operational in Maputo, since 2009 - actively promoting the development of social and durable recycling models. Besides environmental improvement through re-use of resources, our main goal is to help provide marginalized groups within society the opportunity to find a way out of poverty, through active participation in recycling programs in the recycling sector.
Alongside the construction of 8 Ecopoints within the city (for the collection and sale of recyclable waste), we have trained HIV-positive women to work as stewards, in charge of operating these Ecopoints, and former waste collectors as mobile recyclers. They independently collect waste directly from private homes, businesses and institutions, which they then bring directly to Ecopoints to be sold. The price obtained for the sale of this recyclable waste goes directly to the mobile recyclers. So from the recycling and re-use of environmentally damaging waste, arises a social business model that benefits all those who take part in it.
With your help and donations, it is possible for mobile recyclers to find a way out of poverty through their own efforts, helping to provide a secure life for themselves and their families and at the same time provide a vital service that helps protect the environment. The environmentally-friendly Recycle-Bike is therefore an essential work tool for mobile recyclers, enabling them to transport large volumes of recyclable waste.
Any donation towards Recycle-Bikes is a start-up investment and should not be seen as a charitable handout! After a one year period of free use of the bikes, the mobile recyclers then pay for their Recycle-Bikes in installments at a 0% interest rate, so that in the end they will own the bikes themselves. This promotes self-belief and a feeling that they achieved this through the fruits of their own labor. The received money will then be used exclusively for material and upkeep costs of the bikes. AMOR takes responsibility for ensuring that any surpluses will solely be invested in new Recycle-Bikes, which will allow further waste collectors to be employed. In this way, your initial donation is like an act of solidarity with a continual economic cycle, helping achieve new perspectives through recycling.
We would like to further improve and build upon our model, however only together can we achieve this goal. As such, we invite you to become a part of our vision.
