Every day, with the help of donations, we can help many elderly survivors of Nazi persecution in Ukraine. They are in a persistently precarious living situation due to the war. This fundraising campaign aims to ensure that several hundred very elderly survivors from the Roma minority receive emergency financial aid.
European Holocaust Memorial Day for Sinti and Roma
On 2 August, we commemorate the last 4,300 Sinti and Roma in the German Nazi concentration camp Auschwitz-Birkenau, who were murdered by the SS on that night in 1944 despite their fierce resistance. In memory of all 500,000 Sinti and Roma murdered in Nazi-occupied Europe, the European Parliament declared this date the
European Holocaust Memorial Day for Sinti and Roma in 2015.
The "Aid network for the survivors of Nazi persecution in Ukraine"
Until now, 48 memorial sites, museums, associations and initiatives have joined forces in the "
Aid network for the survivors of Nazi persecution in Ukraine". Since 9 March, this unprecedented alliance has been able to help almost 400 survivors of Nazi persecution, among them many survivors of the Roma Genocide, as well as their relatives and colleagues from our partner institutions, in a variety of ways. So far, almost 100,000 euros in donations have been used for this purpose. The coordination of the aid network is supported by the
Foundation Remembrance, Responsibility, Future (EVZ). Since the beginning of the war, the EVZ Foundation has also supported numerous Roma self-organisations in Ukraine that provide humanitarian aid and support Roma Holocaust survivors in particular.
