3 New Volunteer Openings at Skateistan

Skateistan is currently seeking volunteers for three positions:

  • Office Intern (Berlin-based, 6 months)
  • Dari-English translator (Remote volunteer)
  • Khmer-English translator (Remote volunteer)

Skateistan began as a Kabul-based Afghan NGO, and now operates projects in Afghanistan and Cambodia. Skateistan focuses on reaching out to girls and working children, using skateboarding as a tool for developing leadership opportunities, and building friendship, trust, and social capital among its students. Across its programs worldwide, Skateistan works with nearly 600 youth each week, and has registered over 2000 students since 2007.  

We also have an extensive international network of groups in other countries supporting our project. Skateistan has over 250 volunteers in 13 countries assisting our programs. It is these volunteer positions that have fueled the growth of our programs, and they are an essential part of the work that we have accomplished thus far.   Office Assistant in Berlin (6-month internship, part-time)

In 2012 Skateistan moved its international headquarters from Kabul, Afghanistan, to Berlin, Germany. The new office has allowed us to be connected more closely with our supporter networks worldwide, and is a hub for our traveling project-based staff and for our fundraising. 

Skateistan is currently seeking an enthusiastic invidual with a passion for non-profit work to join our team as an Office Assistant in a six-month internship position. The position offers the successful candidate the opportunity to build experience and to gain insight into the workings of an International NGO that is recognized for its innovation in the field of Sport for Development.

Tasks:

  • General office tasks: posting mail/books/promotional material/donor letters
  • Answering the phone
  • Office organization and filing
  • Inventory counts
  • Preparing merchandise and materials for events
  • Updating contact database
  • Basic office purchases
  • Basic bookkeeping tasks
  • Translation (English/German) as needed

Requirements:

  • Berlin-based for a minimum of six months
  • Able to commit 16 hours/week during regular office hours (Mon-Fri, 9am-5pm)
  • Native German speaker with strong English skills (written/spoken)
  • Good communication skills
  • Proficient in Excel and Word
  • Able to multi-task
  • Self-motivated and strong attention to detail
Desired but not necessary:
  • Graduate or student of Business, Law, Accountancy
  • Six months experience in Administrative or Office environment
  • Good local knowledge of Berlin
  • Drivers licence
  • Experience volunteering for a non-profit

Remote Translator Positions (2)

Skateistan is currently looking for two volunteers with the ability to translate written documents to assist our projects in Afghanistan and Cambodia in a Remote Translator Position. We are seeking one volunteer who is fluent in both Dari/Farsi and English, and another volunteer who is fluent in Khmer and English, who would work with project staff via e-mail and Skype to ensure proper translation of program material for our students.  

Remote volunteers can be based anywhere in the world, but must have a reliable internet connection.

As an NGO that operates in multiple countries we rely on our ability to provide culturally appropriate programming to our students and staff, which requires knowledge and understanding of local languages and customs. The Remote Translator Position would be able to provide Skateistan's staff with the ability to continue to improve our programs, ensuring that our team has the ability to effectively communicate at each of our projects, while freeing up local staff to focus on day-to-day program activities.

Tasks:

  • Translation of educational and administrative documents between English and Dari/Farsi for Afghanistan as well as English and Khmer for Cambodia.  
  • Translation/transcription of short written, audio or video interviews for internal or external media use

Requirements:

  • Ability to read, write and speak fluent Dari/Farsi or Khmer, as well as English
  • Willing to donate 3-4 hours per week assisting our project-based teams via e-mail and Skype
  • Reliable and good communication skills
  • Reliable internet connection
  • Basic computer skills: Word, Excel, e-mail, Skype
  • Previous knowledge of Skateistan activities is desired but not necessary
