About this project

The Covid19 pandemic and the war in Ukraine are currently severe challenges for seafarers from all over the world. On the one hand, we look after two ship crews from the pacific island state of Kiribati, who did not come home to their families for up to three years because of the pandemic. After a long odyssey, they are now back home, but almost all of them have lost their jobs and there is no prospect of finding a new job any time soon. We support them and their families in a very practical way with necessary goods such as clothing for children and adults, school supplies and whatever else is needed. We need financial support for both the donations in kind and the logistics costs.

Furthermore, we are currently accommodating seafarers and their families in our house on the Elbe, who can no longer go home due to the war in Ukraine. We offer accommodation, food, pastoral care, support with administrative tasks and much more. We cannot do this work without donations.

We work closely with the Hamburg authorities such as the Port Medical Service and the Social Advisory Board of the Port of Hamburg and are supported by volunteers. As a non-profit association with over 120 years of experience, we finance our specific work to a large extent through donations.

That's why we ask - also on behalf of our seafarers - help us to help!

Thank you very much!
Fiete Sturm, diaconal house manager of the Seaman's Mission Hamburg-Altona
