Current situation
The hospital is located in a small town called Beer Thialane. The electricity suppy is very unstable which leads to long lasting blackouts. In the maternity of the hospital, 20 children are born every month. Especially the maternity is affected by the blackouts leading to children being born in the dark or with the light of a flashlight.
In the last Semester we were able to install 30% of the needed photovoltaic capacity on the roof of the hospital. This semester we plan to install the missing 70% to finish the project and improve the situation in the hospital.
We want to improve the situation
As members of Greening Africa Together and also university students, our main objective is to improve this situation in the hospital by providing stable and environmentally friendly electricity through PV. The The doctors and midwives of the hospital are involved actively in this project and will manage the maintenance of the system.
We want to ensure that the hospital covers its electricity demand without any outage. This is important especially because this hospital is the only place with a maternity, and all women in the village give birth there. So, an electricity blackout can be a big risk for the woman and the baby and for this reason a decentralized PV-System is necessary.
Our technical concept
The electrification of the hospitalwill be realized with a stand-alone Photovoltaic system, with an efficient DC System. The electricity that is produced through the modules will be distributed to the load and battery via the charge controller.
