About this project
Indonesia is particularly affected by this man-made threat. On the beaches of the Indonesian coastal city of Ambon, our project site, new plastic waste washes up every hour. There are no facilities for the disposal or recycling of the plastic waste.
With the production of our bricks, we want to reduce the amount of plastic in the environment, recycle the plastic, and provide a useful reuse as a construction material. Our production process starts with cleaning and crushing the plastic. Then the plastic is melted, pressed into the brick form and cooled. Circular economy is particularly important to us. If a brick is damaged during its lifetime, we remelt it and make a new one.
In addition, our project has two other unique characteristics. We are a team of 16 students at KIT. Due to our different majors, each member can work in the area of his or her own strengths. The second unique aspect is that we want to hand over the project as a start-up to the people in Ambon after its successful establishment. This approach is rooted in our student organization Enactus, to improve the world in small steps and to help people to help themselves eventually.
We are currently working on optimizing our brick. In order to be able to produce it in higher quantities for test purposes and pilot projects, we need a new, two-part production plant, for the construction of which we rely on donations.
