About this project

The organisation Smile for Children e.V. supports the children of the orphanage "QK Children's Home" in Nakuru, Kenya. Founded in 2008 by Lindy Kisaka, who was 28 at the time, the orphanage has already taken in hundreds of children over the past 14 years.

The home currently houses around 50 children between the ages of 1 and 17, who have been orphaned and/or are victims of abuse and extreme neglect. At QK Orphanage, the children find a home where they are provided with care, education, and many future prospects. As an NGO run by volunteers, Smile for Children does not use any funding on administrative costs, so that 100% of donations are passed on to the orphanage in Kenya.

Until 2020, the children of the orphanage lived in a small house in Nakuru on a rental basis. The long-term goal has been to build a sustainable house on a piece of land outside of Nakuru for years, but so far there has not been enough funding.

When the children of the orphanage QK Children's Home were given notice that the lease of the property would be terminated, the orphanage had to act quickly. Within a month, a home had to be found for the approximately 50 children between the ages of 1 and 17.

In October and November 2020, we joined forces to build a house on a plot of land outside Nakuru with limited funding. Since the children moved in in November 2020, the house has gradually improved and been made into a home.

Milestones that we have achieved so far include: the construction of a solar system and a chicken coop, which have further promoted self-sufficiency, the construction of a water tank, which collects rainwater and thus relieves the orphanage's water supply, and the construction of a wall around the property, which protects the children from strangers and wild animals.

The Kitchen & Dining Hall Project

Another big concern, which would relieve the children's supply enormously, is the construction of a kitchen, including a dining hall for the children.
Currently, the cook of the orphanage and the head of the home, cook on a rudimentary outdoor cooking area, which does not offer sufficient and hygienic conditions and is a fire hazard. In addition, the cooking area is not sufficiently equipped to feed around 50 children and is in urgent need of replacement.
With the help of the betterplace community, we hope to be able to fulfil this wish for the children and the home's director as soon as possible!
The donation of 15,000 euros will make it possible to construct the building, which will combine a dining room and kitchen and even provide space on the roof to hang laundry. This will make it possible to work on the property in the most space-saving way possible.

Thanks in advance to everyone who is willing support this project!
Together we will be able to offer the children a worthy place where they can cook and have meals together.
