About this project

iGEM:
We are a team of young students participating in the iGEM competition.
iGEM (International Genetically Engineered Machine) is a non-commercial international competition in the field of synthetic biology. Synthetic biology uses the building blocks of life to modify biological systems for a specific benefit.
The goal is to use the potential of synthetic biology to develop creative solutions to current problems in medical diagnostics, environmental protection, and biology/biotechnology.
This competition is organized by the iGEM Foundation, an independent, non-profit organization that promotes the development, communication, education of synthetic biology and supports an open, collaborative community.

Motivation:
Our project idea arose from the original motivation to develop a test for the early detection of esophageal cancer. The test is based on the detection of small changes in the concentration of so-called tumor markers (proteins) in the blood. These tumor markers occur in the early stages of cancer and offer the possibility of detecting esophageal cancer earlier than is currently possible. This earlier diagnosis would increase the otherwise low cure success. The problem of detecting substances that are only present in very small amounts can be helpful not only for medical diagnostics in the detection of tumor markers. This has motivated us to develop a system that can detect even smallest amounts. The detection system has a modular design. This modular design allows not only the detection of tumor markers in esophageal cancer, but also many other compounds, as long as a suitable antibody exists for them.

Team:
We are 16 students of biology and biotechnology from the Bachelor, as well as the Master. All participants are volunteers and organize the project in addition to their studies. In 2013 and 2014 there was already an iGEM team at the TU Braunschweig, which was awarded a gold medal in each case.
