About this project

FreiRaum Würzburg is located in a small side street to Sanderstraße in a rented location. What makes FreiRaum so unique is the basic idea of a money-free space that is accessible to all people - regardless of age, origin and socio-economic status. Here, people meet across social boundaries.

 Sharing space
FreiRaum is a place full of instruments, sewing machines, sofas, a for-free "shop", a kitchen and free space to fill. It invites people to meet, make music, be human, be creative & thinking together.

Sharing culture
The FreiRaum is a venue where people organize concerts, vernissages, readings and lectures and give away their skills in regular courses. Here, the boundaries between organizers and visitors become blurred. This means that there is no one to decide whether the art is exhibited or not. On the contrary, people are encouraged to take space and supported in how to organize an exhibition of their art.

Sharing things
The FreiRaum is a space for further thinking and trying out how our society can work beyond the logic of consumption. You can find a small "free-shop" in the Freiraum, for a sustainable and appreciative use of clothing, household items, furniture, books, etc., . "Clothing donation" parties are organized, where people can relate to each other instead of consuming anonymously. Everything that is available in the Freiraum is for communal use. The paints can be used for painting, the fabrics and sewing machines for sewing, and the instruments for making music. Tea and coffee is always there and food can be prepared in the kitchen for a shared meal.

Sharing responsibility
In the FreiRaum Decisions are made by an open organizational group. Every person using the FreiRaum is an equal participant of the space and can take responsibility for shaping and taking care of it. We set this personal responsibility against the general spirit of service, hierarchies and consumption.

Over the years, we have noticed that it is easy to say "everyone is invited to be there" - but in reality, due to social power dynamics and hierarchies, not all people take equal space. That's why we explicitly want to offer safer spaces for marginalized groups and share our resources!
In the last seven years we have managed to raise the rent and utilities for this special space together with donors, foundations, Küfas, and more. However, we need to keep working on this! We would like to spread the rent over more shoulders, so that we can devote ourselves to the contents with full energy and not worry about money...!
