About this project

 What we do
The goal of our programs is to improve the health and development of children in townships and rural areas using sustainable methods, including health education, awareness and prevention to teachers, parents, and caretakers.
Location
MASAKHANE is a traditional rural settlement of  informal housing adjacent to the industrial area of Gansbaai, a fishing village 150km east of Cape Town with 20 000 residents of which approximately 6,000 are children under the age of twelve. Most residents stem from the former "home-lands" of Transkei and Ciskei in the Eastern Cape. The migration of people to the Overstrand has resulted in poverty due to lack of employment opportunities and the lack of services and resources to meet the needs of families.
The current situation and need
Working within these communities we’ve seen a dire necessity for mental health support and the importance of the mother’s mental health and the development of children. To fully support mothers and the development of our future children we need to support and educate communities on mental health topics, starting with the youth/future mothers, as well as pre-natal and post-natal mothers. The consequences of mental illness in communities set up a vicious cycle reinforcing poverty, abuse and addictions which can have lasting effects on the unborn child and the development of young children. These effects could result in preventable deaths.
The solution
Mental disorders are detectable and treatable. The Masakhane Moms Mental Health Program can provide the necessary support by activating support groups, providing education and skills development and awareness workshops to support the wellbeing of mothers and their children. Creating awareness, addressing the stigma, promoting better understanding of mental health and referrals by qualified psychiatry nurse to more specialized care, working with state and private organisations.
How to support the Mental Health Program?
Help us to support and empower Masakhane Moms to be able to seek advice and make use of mental health support services in Masakhane. To realize the dream of starting the Mental Health Program we need to appoint a specialized nurse to run the program and be on-site at our Health Training Center within Masakhane.

With 3000 Euros, we can start our weekly much-needed support groups and urgent mental health awareness and workshops for a year.
