About this project

Lena Widmann from Urbane Gärten Karlsruhe gGmbH is responsible for this project
In order to transform CO2-neutral organic waste into flowering landscapes in the city, we need your support. An electrically operated bicycle trailer alone helps us immensely and you can actively support us with your donation.

Who is the donation going to?
We are Urbane Gärtner Karlsruhe, a growing social enterprise and founder of the compost bike project. This collaborative initiative, supported by students at Karlshochschule International University, aims to make cities more resilient and foster social connections through a simple yet often forgotten activity: composting.

But why and how can this work efficiently and sustainably?
In Karlsruhe, the city's organic waste is taken to Sinsheim, 60 km away, to produce biogas. If you consider that a truck emits at least 156g CO2/km, it emits 9kg just for the trip from Karlsruhe to Sinsheim. For two-week trips, that adds up to around 486kg of CO2 emissions per year.
Our proposal: A circular, zero-emission system where everyone living in the city recognizes the value of organic waste and healthy, fertile local soil. That's why we start right in the urban jungle, where there are many people who produce waste and need food. Best conditions!

We design bike routes to collect organic waste from our partners and turn it into fertile soil at a nearby composting site. These locations form the core of our routes. Most often they are an integral part of newly created urban community gardens (such as the SpielFeldM2 right next to the Hoepfner brewery or the garden school near the city center).
We focus on raising awareness of organic waste by working with like-minded partners e.g. B. Cafes, restaurants, nurseries, hairdressers, retail and private individuals. Partners who started this adventure with us in 2021 are the Soli Café and the Intro Café on Kronenplatz and the Kulturküche on Kaiserstraße. They consciously give us their organic waste — and share values.

Together we raise awareness of our waste and how it can contribute to a sustainable future in the city that is worth living in.

With the compost bike we can achieve these goals very practically and on site! It can transport large amounts of organic waste and allows easy access to almost every area of the city.

As more organizations want to become partners and we expand our routes, a reliable bike and an efficient e-trailer become necessary. Join us and help us build thriving communities!
