Book Education - Books for young children in Africa

A project from Betfrika e.V.
in Lome, Togo

In Germany, we have easy access to books, but it's not the case in Africa. Book Education aims to provide various kinds of books to schoolchildren, students, and professors in West African countries in order to raise their educational levels.

About this project

Among all living species, humankind has always been a unique entity regarding its physiology, skills, capabilities and attributes. Therefore, the intellectual load of each individual relatively depends on what he has learned, experienced, assimilated, and retained from the different events and experiences that have occurred in his life. Education systems have been set up to provide young people with the necessary intellectual background to implement successful and positive societal changes. Children are educated to purposefully learn how to think, develop strong values, turn dreams into reality and thus, foster the development of their homeland.

Unfortunately, in low-income countries, the ratio of books per child is one book for every 300 children, far below the percentage of 13 books per child in the middle and upper-income countries ( Handbook of Early Literacy Research 2006 ). Therefore we initiate “Book Education” in order to provide various kinds of learning materials to schoolchildren, students, and professors. As 80% of preschool and after-school programs in low-income populations do not have age-appropriate books for their children, we believe we can improve the education in West African countries to a level comparable to that of developed countries with tailored and quality material.

The idea initiated by BETFRIKA comes as a first step toward mobilising existing resources. We collect books from individuals, schools, communities and companies for our actions. Thus, we seek to create an interest in reading and self-learning, starting with 1/3 as our coverage rate for every class. We collect and buy books in European countries that we ship to Africa and then give them to children directly in their class.

Please consider a donation to our cause to support the education of young people in Africa. 80% of your donation will be used to acquire books and 20% for operations and logistics.

Quick Facts:
  • With your donation of just Euro 150, eleven children can have a good quality book;
  • Euro 250 provides a classroom with books(1/3 as coverage rate);
  • 1,500 Euro pays for one round of books for a middle school institution.
