Toys for children in the emergency shelter for Ukrainian refugees

A project from DRK-Kreisverband Neuss e.V.
in Neuss, Germany

As of 11.04. we are in charge of two emergency shelters for a total of 350 people. Among them we expect 100-150 children. To make them feel at ease, we want to equip a playroom and provide outdoor toys.

About this project

Thousands of people arrive in Germany every day, fleeing the war in Ukraine; around 1,500 have already arrived in Neuss. The city of Neuss is building several accommodation facilities. We, the DRK-Kreisverband Neuss e.V., have been entrusted with the supervision of two accommodation facilities, which are to take in people from 11.04. onwards. On the one hand, this is a container building that offers space for 52 people, and on the other hand, we are currently adapting the Neuss Ice Sports Hall so that it can accommodate 300 people. Among the refugees in our two accommodation facilities, we expect 100-150 children. In the accommodation facility Eissporthalle Neuss, a playroom for children is planned, which we would like to equip with toys. It is important to us to provide the children with opportunities for sufficient exercise and sports. Since the playroom is quite small compared to the number of children expected, we would like to purchase additional outdoor toys.

These include:
  • Indoor toys (building blocks, dolls, doll carts, toy cars...).
  • Outdoor toys (footballs, inline skates, scooters, tricycles, jump ropes...)
In addition, we would be very happy to be able to give each child their own cuddly toy when they move into the accommodation facility.

In our district association there are many volunteers. The volunteer group leaders of our Youth Red Cross are happy to lead some play hours in the accommodation facilities.
