Capacity building - mental health services in Gambia

A project from European Alliance Against Depression e.V.
in Bakau, Gambia

In Gambia, only 12 % of people with mental health disorders receive treatment - there are simply not enough services. Help us build local capacity by training Gambian health care workers in the field of mental health.

About this project

Gambia is a small country in West-Africa and home to around 2.5 million people.

According to the World Health Organisation (2007), around 12% of Gambians are likely to suffer from a mental disorder and 3% a severe mental disorder.  Most commonly, this includes schizophrenia, depressive and anxiety disorders.

Only a very small minority (12%) of Gambians with mental disorders receive treatment.

The limited services available are mostly for adults with severe mental health disorders, delivered through the single psychiatric hospital in the country.

There are very few mental health professionals able to deliver outpatient services.

This project seeks to address this gap by building the capacity of Gambian health care workers.

The European Alliance Against Depression is partnering with the Gambian Supportive Activists Foundation to deliver a face-to face training program (one day), consisting of five core elements, that will build mental health capacity of Gambian health care workers.

Participants will increase their awareness about mental health in general, learn to recognise the signs and symptoms of the most relevant mental disorders and learn basic information about treatment.

The training will be free to participants and be targeted at:

  • health and mental health professionals, including nurses
  • medical students
  • mental health support groups/ NGOs
  • key decision makers (e.g. from the Gambian Ministry of Health)
This training will be delivered as a pilot and inform further training sessions to be planned and delivered.

Donations to this project will cover costs related to providing the training and ensure that it can be delivered as widely as possible, with no charge to participants.
