About this project

Fortunately, there is an easy solution to these hardships: sock protectors can avoid conflicts with customers and head umbrellas can keep heads cool.
Listros are the eponyms of the LISTROS Association in Berlin. The term derives from Latin “lustra“ and means “make it shine“ We regard the Listros as representatives of all children and teenagers in Ethiopia who, through part-time jobs facilitate their education and a promising life.
THIS IS HOW WE WANT TO SUPPORT THE LISTROS
On October 2012 we will celebrate LISTROS DAY in Addis Ababa and expect several thousand Listros to attend. Acknowledging social reality in Ethiopia and regarding their efforts as a contemporary, life-affirming contribution to Ethiopian society, we want to alleviate some of the stress of their daily workload by giving them sock protectors and head umbrellas.
Shining shoes as a ticket to education: Approximately 60 percent of the 84 million Ethiopian inhabitants are under the age of 15 and are therefore the main group to shape Ethiopia's future. In this country, EDUCATION is written in capital letters. While school attendance itself is free, school uniforms are obligatory and need to be purchased. Since most parents are not able to finance any necessary learning materials, many youngsters decide to work as shoeshiners, snack-sellers, or in households in addition to attending school.
We pay respect to the Listros because they rely on their own self-initiative in order to improve their lives. They work for their education, not instead of it. They support their families and gather experiences for their adult life. We aim to empower them and we believe in their capacity building capability.
In all its projects, LISTROS Association supports teenagers who work, but not teenage or child labor in the sense of exploitative occupations that force children to work instead of acquiring an education. This should be vehemently opposed and LISTROS Association condemns this kind of exploitation that robs them of their childhood and, in many instances, of a happy life as a grown-up. With our initiatives, we want to contribute to social development in Ethiopia that, in the long run, makes it unnecessary for teenagers to work for their education.
