The Solling in the middle of the Weserbergland is one of the largest forest areas in Lower Saxony and was named Forest Area of the Year 2013. With its high proportion of forest, it is not surprising that the forest has had a special significance for the population for centuries and still does. For generations, people have lived and worked from and in the forest - as forest workers, glassblowers or charcoal burners. Numerous sources and relics as well as legends of poachers and forest spirits bear witness to this.
But the consequences of climate change do not stop at the Solling and are omnipresent!
Formerly dense and vital forests have suffered - they fell victim to storms, bark beetles and drought. Currently, losses of about 1,500 ha of old-growth forests have been recorded. Rare animal species such as lynx, wildcat, eagle owl and black stork are losing their habitat as a result. This not only changes the forest's typical climate, but also reduces the forest's performance as a CO2 reservoir.
Let's tackle it together!
The important task of the foresters is now to replant the lost forest areas with site-adapted tree species and to strengthen the Solling for climate change. The aim is to grow healthy and stable mixed forests that will protect our climate in the future.
You can make your own personal contribution. Support our foresters in preserving our local multi-talent - the forest.
Because forests are...
Habitat
Wood supplier
Recreational space
Climate protector
... and should remain so for future generations!
The Future Forest Foundation supports the reforestation of degraded forest areas in the Solling on land owned by the Lower Saxony State Forests. The newly planted forests are to grow into healthy and stable mixed forests and protect our climate in the future. To ensure that the forest can continue to act as a climate protector in the future, the foundation teaches children and young people about the diverse properties of the forest for us humans and our environment!
