Funded Emergency surgery for Tanaro

A project from Gnadenbrothof Ziegenhain e. V.
in Ersfeld, Germany

Our Tanaro had severe colic in the night from January 16th to 17th, 2022 and underwent emergency surgery. We have to raise around €8,000 for the surgery by the end of this week so we can bring him back home

About this project

Our Tanaro had a severe intestinal obstruction on January 16th, 2022. He underwent emergency surgery that same night at the Kottenforst horse clinic.
Since we were really fast, and minutes count, only 1.5 m of intestine had to be removed.
Most of the time, when a horse has colic that bad, it dies. Even attempts to operate on it are usually only 50% successful. Our Tanaro is already 29 years old, but has so far survived both the surgery and the recovery phase and the first half day afterwards. The success so far is due to the fact that we are a very competent, fast team and had very good veterinarians at the start. The operation costs around €8,000. We have to raise that by the end of this week so that we can bring Tanaro back home.
Please donate if you can and please please share this post so we can hopefully get the sum together! We thank you from the bottom of our hearts!!!
If all goes well we can pick up TANARO in a week and by then we need to have built a stable that will make sure he can be with his friends. In order for him to survive this difficult operation, he must be given precisely weighed food every hour and a half, day and night, for four to five months.
The intestinal suture can only let small amounts of feed through, since the scar tissue no longer has any elasticity. This will take time, but is not particularly stressful for the operated horse. It is simply extremely important that the care team consistently and responsibly feeds this precisely dosed, moistened amount of hay every 1.5 hours day and night. If a little too much food gets into the sutures, the horse will suffer from renewed colic and there is a high probability of death.
We already have experience in having very, very old horses operated on if necessary and have had very good results with it. The other old horse LIMAHL, who had a similar operation 5 years ago, is over 30 years old and has remained perfectly healthy since this intestinal operation 5 years ago.
In recent years Andrea has found out what gives and what takes away the chance for horses with such colic operations. And it may not matter much what caused the colic surgery. The main point is always the scar = slightly narrowed part of the intestine. If too much food gets to this scar and the people who belong to the horses are not willing to feed delicately measured amounts day and night for several months, then horses have little chance of surviving this intrusion. It is also deeply saddening for the good surgeons when they have operated brilliantly and their efforts end up being wasted... not to mention the terrible suffering of the animal involved.
We will do everything humanly possible to ensure that Tanaro gets through this time well, he is part of our family and we very much hope that you will support us!!! Warm regards from the Gnadenbrothof Ziegenhain!!!
