About this project

The landlocked country of Malawi, located in south-east Africa, is one of the most beautiful countries in Africa, with its extensive highlands and Lake Malawi running along its eastern border. At the same time, Malawi is one of the poorest countries in the world. The majority of the population lives on less than one US dollar per day. While agricultural products make up a large part of the country's exports, hunger and malnutrition are widespread. In addition to high maternal and infant mortality, the high number of people infected with HIV is a challenge for the health system there. Life expectancy is currently 63 years.

The care and treatment of people with chronic illnesses and physical impairments is mostly provided by medically untrained relatives. The area of rehabilitation in particular presents people with a special challenge. This precarious situation is aggravated by the fact that there are only 124 physiotherapists practising among the 21 million inhabitants of the country (as of 2020, world.physio). Especially in view of the expected population growth to 38 million by 2050, this number seems alarmingly low.

Together with the College of Medicine in Blantyre, which was founded in 1999 and has been training physiotherapists at university level since 2010, we (physiotherapy students at the Hochschule für Gesundheit in Bochum (www.hs-gesundheit.de)) want to start an educational sponsorship that will sustainably strengthen the promotion of competences and experiences of students in both countries.

The aim of this project "Educational Sponsorships" is to offer two Malawian students of physiotherapy from the College of Medicine/Kamuzu University of Health Sciences in Blantyre an exceptional opportunity to experience personality-shaping sustainable educational experiences for 2 months in Germany. On site, the two students will get to know the German health system, take part in courses at HS Gesundheit and learn about research projects. Furthermore, they will be instructed in different practical facilities with special professional focuses. The intensive exchange should pave the way for a long-lasting partnership and an exchange of knowledge for the students as a whole.

To make this possible, we ask for your help and donations to financially support the following cost areas for the students:
  • Visa
  • Semester fees
  • Accommodation in Germany
  • Living expenses
  • Flights

We would like to thank the Swiss-German University Westphalia e.V. for supporting the project on this platform.
