About us
Among the independent welfare organizations, the Workers' Welfare Association (AWO) is a welfare organization with a special character due to its history and its socio-political self-image. It was founded in 1919 by SPD Reichstag member Maria Juchacz as the main committee for workers' welfare within the Social Democratic Party.
As part of the labor movement, it was banned by the Nazis in 1933, and its officials were persecuted and arrested. After the war, it was reestablished as an independent association.
The Nuremberg district association, whose chairman until its ban in 1933 was Martin Bächer, was founded on November 25, 1920.
Today, it offers a wide range of services, from daycare centers to two retirement and nursing homes. In between, there are many counseling and assistance services for numerous people in their respective living situations.
