About us

Large-Scale Conservation Project Lusatian Lakeland
Post-mining landscapes in the heart of the Lusatian Lakeland were created around 40 years ago through lignite mining in the open-cast mines of the Lusatian region. While such areas were still considered "lunar landscapes" some 30 years ago, their importance for nature conservation was soon recognized. Due to their lack of fragmentation, low disturbance and nutrient levels, and their diverse soils and habitats for plants and animals, they are of outstanding ecological value.
The Large-Scale Conservation Project (NGP) aims to preserve valuable habitats, restore them, and develop them based on ecological conservation criteria. The main objectives of the project focus on applying maintenance and protection strategies, such as large-scale process protection, extensive grazing of open land with sheep and cattle, the development of large biotopes, and the protection of rare animal and plant species.
