We received a payout of €1,501.12

Ana Sarcevic  28 April 2021 at 06:04 PM

Dear supporters of paediatric oncology at St Damien in Haiti,  In the last newsletter we celebrated together the significant project milestone. Thanks to your generous support the project need was fully funded. Today the remaining amount, namely €1,501.12 will be transferred to the St Damien paediatric oncology department.  The year 2020 was very challenging due to the political unrest, a currency crisis and COVID-19 shaped life in Haiti. The St. Damien Hospital reacted immediately to protect patients, relatives and employees. Strict hygiene protocols were implemented and an isolation ward for COVID-19 patients and suspected cases was established. While some wards in the hospital had to be temporarily closed, the oncology department remained permanently open. The full health care services were continuously provided as there is no other shelter in the country for paediatric cancer patients. Due to the weakened immune system of some patients, access had to be limited to a few visits from relatives and to a minimum of staff. Very strict hygiene protection measures remained implemented to this day. That way it was ensured that no cancer patient got infected with corona virus SARS-CoV-2.  Two specialists in paediatric oncology, a pediatrician, five nurses and three auxiliary carers work currently in the paediatric oncology ward in St. Damien. In 2020 they cared for 250 children with cancer in the inpatient setting for several weeks and months. Sixty-nine new cases were added and a total of 1,279 treatments were carried out for children with cancer. The St. Damien Hospital specializes in the treatment of 10 different types of tumors and performs surgeries, chemotherapy and supportive therapies. For the children who need radiation therapy, there is an established cooperation with a renowned hospital in the Dominican Republic. During the long treatment period, children and their parents become part of the NPH family and receive comprehensive support and psychological counseling. Paediatric oncology treatment costs are very high. Beside a symbolic contribution from the affected parents, children with cancer receive free comprehensive medical care thanks to generous supporters from all around the world. The donations from Ana's project “Let's Support Children with Cancer in Haiti” will contribute significantly to surgery cost and life-saving cancer therapy for little heroes.  We thank you from the bottom of the heart.Little heroes do too.  With love,NHP team
