The UNFPA (https://www.countryoffice.unfpa.org/tanzania) reports that Geita is among the poorest regions in Tanzania and is characterized by poor reproductive health indicators including high child marriage prevalence rates, high adolescent fertility rates, and low contraceptive rates. Interestingly, Bukombe district where Planet Child Tanzania envisions its country office is more affected than the other districts in the region with the same problems. Based on that report many children are neglected, employed in the mines, and or working in paddy farms as forced laborers. Many girls are predominantly forced to get married and some are victims of child labor (housekeepers) out of the region, dropping out of school and facing multiple violence and abuse. Strikingly, nearly a third of teenagers (29%) and (30%) aged 15-19 begin childbearing or being impregnated yearly.
