About us
The Hessian Society for Ornithology and Nature Conservation e.V. (HGON) is a non-profit nature conservation association recognized under the Federal Nature Conservation Act. It has been a driving force in nature conservation in Hesse for more than 50 years and is the largest organization of its kind in Germany. The majority of Hesse's nature reserves can be traced back to the commitment of HGON. HGON has prepared the return of numerous, formerly extirpated animal species and given valuable impulses for research and protection of many animal groups. Every year, HGON members collect data on the distribution and population of bird species, which form the basis for conservation efforts and for assessing the state of the environment. Over 300 hectares of protected areas and two bat houses (with about 2,000 mouse-eared bats) are owned by HGON. HGON maintains its own nature conservation foundation.
