Harry's Camino

Am 15. September beginne ich meinen Weg (Camino) nach Santiago de Compostela, fast 500km bzw. 300 Meilen zu Fuss in drei Wochen quer durch Nordspanien. Warum mache ich denn sowas? Mein Onkel Harry, seines Zeichens begeisterter Radfahrer und Outdoorfreund, hat in der Vergangenheit bereits Teile des Camino zu Fuss und mit dem Rad absolviert und hatte zuletzt vor, mit anderen Radfahrern die Gesamtlänge des Camino zu bestreiten. Leider ist er jedoch vergangenen September nur wenige Wochen nach seiner Krebsdiagnose gestorben. In dieser harten Zeit für die ganze Familie war ein Lichtblick die exzellente palliativmedizinische Versorgung, die es ihm ermöglichte, Zeit mit seinen Liebsten zu verbringen und Abschied zu nehmen.

Damit noch mehr Patienten und Familien in Zukunft mit so wenig Schmerzen, Angst und Leid wie möglich ihre letzte Lebenszeit gestalten können, unterstütze ich mit dieser Aktion die Deutsche Gesellschaft für Palliativmedizin e.V. (DGP). Die DGP hat sich insbesondere der interdisziplinären und multiprofessionellen Vernetzung aller in der Palliativversorgung Tätigen verschrieben: Mediziner, Pfleger und andere Berufsgruppen. Ziel ist es, die Fortentwicklung einer umfassenden Palliativversorgung interdisziplinär und berufsgruppenübergreifend auf allen Ebenen zu fördern. Das geht über Medienkampagnen, Weiterbildungsangebote, medizinische Forschung bis hin zu Förderpreisen - gerne mal einlesen under www.dgpalliativmedizin.de

On September 15th I begin my journey to Santiago de Compostela, 300 miles on foot for three weeks crossing Northern Spain. Why on earth am I doing this? My uncle Harry, passionate cyclist and outdoor enthusiast, has previously completed sections of the Camino de Santiago on foot and by bike, and had plans for another cycling tour covering the whole length of the Camino. Sadly, he passed away last September only weeks after his terminal cancer diagnosis. During that difficult time he was fortunate to have excellent palliative care, allowing him to spend his last weeks relatively lucid and painfree and making memories with his loved ones before saying good bye.

In his memory on the anniversary of his death I am completing the Camino to raise funds for the German Association for Palliative Medicine (DGP), so that more patients and families can spend the end of their life with as little pain and fear as possible. The goal of the DGP is to enable further development of palliative care on all levels in an interdisciplinary fashion, involving doctors, nurses, carers and other specialties. They work with other European and international associations to fund research, enable professional development for those working in the sector, run media campaigns and create resources and guides for patients and families.

The DGP, Harry's family and I are grateful for every donation. I am currently in the process of confirming donation matching through the QBE Foundation.
