Worum es geht

Support Allen Kerton’s efforts to run the Sahara desert – part of the 4 Deserts Race Series - in support of the sea conservation activities of the Song Saa Foundation. This event aims to contribute € 2500 towards the € 10,200 total

The 4 Deserts Race Series is recognized as one of the world’s toughest endurance race events. The series comprises the Sahara Race (Namibia), Gobi March (China), Atacama Crossing (Chile) and The Last Desert (Antarctica), each race covering 250-kilometers, which the competitor is expected to complete over the course of seven days.

In 2016, friend and Song Saa Ambassador, Allen Keaton, will seek to complete all four of the series races. This 1000-kilometer challenge will be the equivalent of completing 26 marathons.

Allen’s motivation is his support and vision to raise € 2500 per for the Song Saa Foundation, starting with the Sahara Race, which will be held in Namib Desert, Namibia, between the 1 – 7 May. The focus of this race is to raise funds in support of the sea-based activities of the Foundation.

Allen is an experienced ultrarunner, triathlete and mountaineer, but the 1000km desert run will be the biggest endurance challenge that he has faced.

Allen was first introduced to Song Saa Foundation in 2010, through working on the design for the award winning Song Saa Private Island. A shared passion for Cambodia and commitment to sustainable development has resulted in Allen’s continued passionate support of Song Saa Foundation’s work in Cambodia.

The Song Saa Foundation works to promote the health and well being of the sea, land and human environments of the Koh Rong archipelago, in southern Cambodia, protecting some of the last remaining habitat of green turtles, horse shoe crabs and dugong in the lower Mekong region.

4 weeks since The Namib Desert and 12 days until The Gobi Desert!!

W. McCallum hat diese Spendenaktion am 07. März 2016 veröffentlicht.

It’s just over 4 weeks since I finished The Sahara Race (Namibia) and in 12 days’’ time I’ll be starting The Gobi March in China.

I’ve been doing mostly short 10k training runs since Namibia and nothing over 15k, so I’m not sure how The Gobi March is going to go for me. It’s been tough deciding whether to recover from the last race or train for the next one, so I’ve ended up doing both, or neither, depending on how you look at it.

My journey to get to the next race will be an interesting one. I’ll fly out of Singapore just after midnight on 16th June, to Shanghai and then on to Urumqui in Xinjiang Province. I’ll then take a train to Hami and finally a 3 to 4 hour drive into The Tien Shan Mountains, and the start of the 250km Gobi Desert Race on the morning of 19th June. The race will likely be a fair bit tougher than my recent one in The Namib Desert, as it will be a combination of cold mountains for the first half, followed by hot, sandy desert for the second. The need for cold weather gear and additional food will almost certainly push my backpack weight over 10kg this time and with steep up and down hill terrane, my pace is going to be a lot slower.

The race will start at 2,500 meters elevation, and climb close to 3,000 meters by Day 2. With about 25% less oxygen available at that altitude and some steep hill sections, the start of this race will be a challenge. The longest stage of the race will again be on Day 5, with an 80km section through the sands of The Black Gobi.

Oh yes and I’ll be running with new (bigger size) shoes this time, so hopefully no, or at least not as many blisters, for me on this run!!!

Allen
