It is the dream of the children in the Ban Buamlao village school to learn English. Doing so will massively enhance their future employment prospects. For instance, they will be able to work in Laos burgeoning tourist industry. Such opportunities are incredibly important in one of the world’s poorest countries with subsistence agriculture accounting for 80% of employment.

The children are enthusiastic students with attendance growing rapidly from 100 students in 2006 to 140 students in 2007.

The village school consists of three enclosed classrooms and one open air, stand-alone classroom. The enclosed classrooms are dilapidated, and lack electricity or running water.

The school is desperately in need of supplies, which are constantly running scarce. Some of the students have workbooks but no textbooks, some have no workbooks and others have no textbooks or workbooks at all. Most of the books are in poor condition.

The school paper supply was exhausted long ago, and the chalk supply is running very low. Most of the children are without erasers or pencils.

Ban Buamlao village is located approximately ten kilometers from Luang Prabang near the western shores of the Mekong river. It is inhabited by subsistence farmers who utilize slash and burn farming practices to prepare fields and grow crops. The village has no electricity or running water, and the estimated average monthly income of each of the seventy or eighty families who live there is between £10-£20 per month.

By donating to this project you can help make a difference to the lives of 140 children attending a rural school whose dream is to learn English but currently lack the means to do so.

I have been to Laos and befriended a young monk from a rural area who has TB. He was sent to LP in order to study and get medical treatments in Thailand. It is true that the people of Laos, Myanmar/Burma, Vietnam and Cambodia are some of the most gentle people in the world, kind, humble, and generous. Not having the most basic of implements is a common problem - ask yourself - how many pencils and pens are in your house that you'll never use again? Handing a ball point pen to one of these kids is met with nearly the same reaction as if you handed a $100 bill to homeless person in the 'first world'.

I have been to this school 3 times and it is a very sad sight to see children who want to learn without books, paper, or even a ball to play with. Quite frankly I was shocked at the conditions I witnessed, but the kids are great and enthusiastic. The Lao people are some of the most sincere and friendly people I have ever encountered.

Hi, Thanks for your question. The original plan was to use a local supplier for the equipment but we have a list of what equipment is needed so we could sort something out regarding an aid package if you have that facility etc. Please let me know if you have any further questions want more info. Best, David.

Hi David, I have been to rural Laos twice last year and can confirm the conditions ou are describing. In Luang Prabang I bought some lao children books and distributed them to kids while travelling. It was really touching to see how much they were cherished! May I know how you keep in touch with the school? Do you bring over the supplies yourself or do you sent the money to somebody locally? Thanks, Joana

Hi, Many thanks for your interest in my project. The project was brought to our attention by a photojournalist based in Laos. The supplies have been sourced from a local supplier and arrangements will made for the photographer and a local contact who helps the school to take the supplies to them. The money is wired direct to the supplier. If you have any further question please do not hesitate to get in touch. With best wishes, David.
