"Reichtum sollte nur einen Zweck haben: Armut abzuschaffen.". Julius Nyere, ehemaliger Präsident Tansanias, sagte vor Jahrzehnten diesen Satz, den wir auf unserer ersten Broschüre als Leitspruch druckten. In der Umbruchzeit 1990 gegründet, hat die GSE heute 25 Mitglieder. Ohne institutionelle Förderung finanzieren wir uns über Mitgliedsbeiträge und Projekte, in denen eine Verwaltungspauschale steckt. In der Berliner Geschäftsstelle sind wir zu zweit - Teilzeitstellen, die über befristete Projekte gerade so finanziert werden.
Zwei miteinander verbundene Schwerpunkte kennzeichnen die mit knappen Ressourcen effektive Arbeit der GSE:

1) Projekte der Entwicklungszusammenarbeit im Ausland
2) entwicklungspolitische Bildungs- und Öffentlichkeitsarbeit in den östlichen Bundesländern.

Unsere Auslandsprojekte basieren auf den Prinzipien der Partnerschaft "auf gleicher Augenhöhe" und der Solidarität. Projektvorschläge kommen von unseren Partnern und werden von diesen mit Unterstützung lokaler Expert_innen umgesetzt. Wir entsenden kein Personal, da es für die Projektdurchführung qualifizierte Menschen in den Ländern gibt. Die GSE unterstützte Projekte in Indien, Ghana, Sansibar, Chile und in Indonesien und hoffentlich bald in Bolivien.

Unsere Inlandsarbeit ist durch die Arbeit an und mit Schulen geprägt, die wir bei der Integration von Themen und Methoden des Globalen Lernens in den Unterricht unterstützen. Dazu bieten wir u.a. Projektunterricht und Lehrerfortbildungen an. Dafür stehen z.B. unsere Projekte "Lernen mit weltweitem Horizont" und "Paul auf Reisen".

Die GSE ist Mitglied im Berliner Entwicklungspolitischen Ratschlag (BER) und in der Vereinigung entwicklungspolitischer Nichtregierungsorganisationen Brandenburgs (VENROB) sowie in der Koordinationsgruppe der entwicklungspolitischen Bildungs- und Aktionstage in Brandenburg (BREBIT).
