In January 2021 we founded the non-profit association "Nistkästen für Dresden" (Nesting Boxes for Dresden) and registered it at the district court of Dresden. We are concerned with equipping Dresden's urban area, in particular existing green spaces, with self-built nesting aids and to be able to offer wild birds living in urban areas more spaces for nesting and thus for raising their young, which have disappeared due to decades of urban development and land sealing.
It does not matter whether they are birds on the Red List, endangered species or those that are not yet considered threatened. They are all in need of protection. Wild birds are also facing increasing problems in rural areas. Industrial agriculture, the use of insecticides and pesticides make it increasingly difficult for the animals to survive.
Nest boxes are made of durable materials that will last for many years with proper care. Our volunteer members take care of the fabrication, installation, and maintenance of existing boxes.
Currently, we work closely with several cemeteries, which offer excellent habitats in the middle of the city due to their location and extensive biodiversity.
